Classical Music gets a fresh twist with Quartet Malamatina at the Meffan this October

Something a little different is coming to Forfar’s Meffan Museum & Art Gallery on Thursday 22 October, as Scotland’s bold guitar quartet, Quartet Malamatina, brings its distinctive sound to the gallery space.

Generously supported by the Chamber Music Scotland Small Venues Touring Fund, the performance promises an evening of classical music with a contemporary edge, blending innovative new works with imaginative reworkings of traditional repertoire.

Formed in Glasgow in 2021 for the United Nations Climate Conference (COP26), Quartet Malamatina is challenging expectations of what a classical guitar quartet can be. The ensemble champions contemporary voices alongside timeless classics, creating performances that reflect the people, ideas and stories shaping the world today.

Drawing inspiration from the rich and diverse traditions of guitar ensemble music, the quartet combines commissioning, arranging and collaboration to create engaging musical experiences for audiences of all backgrounds. Their work spans concert halls, community centres and cultural venues, bringing concert music to new audiences in fresh and accessible ways.

The atmospheric surroundings of The Meffan provide the perfect backdrop for this intimate performance, offering visitors the chance to experience live music from a quartet that is helping to reshape the future of classical guitar.

Susan Curran, ANGUSalive Heritage Learning & Engagement Lead said:

“When people think of classical guitar, they don’t always expect innovation, surprise and contemporary storytelling, but that’s exactly what Quartet Malamatina brings.

We’re thrilled to welcome them to The Meffan and to offer audiences the chance to experience world-class live music in such an inspiring setting. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover something new and enjoy the gallery in a completely different way.”

Ross from Quartet Malamatina said:

“One of the things we love most is surprising people. Many audience members come along expecting one thing and leave with a completely different idea of what a classical guitar quartet can sound like.

We can’t wait to bring our music to The Meffan and perform in such a beautiful gallery setting.”

Whether you’re a lifelong classical music fan or simply curious to hear something new, this promises to be an evening full of discovery, creativity and exceptional musicianship.
