Carnoustie Fitness Instructor honoured to attend King’s Garden Party

An inspirational Carnoustie fitness instructor has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to health and wellbeing after attending the King’s Garden Party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

On Tuesday 30 June, ANGUSalive Group Exercise instructor Fiona Joss attended the prestigious event after being nominated by participants from her popular exercise class at Carnoustie Sports Centre.

While many people see retirement as a chance to slow down, Fiona chose a different path. Recognising a lack of opportunities for older adults, those returning to exercise and people living with health conditions, she trained as a Zumba instructor as she approached retirement, determined to make physical activity more accessible and enjoyable.

What began as a class of just six participants has grown into a thriving community of around 60 people each week. Fiona welcomes everyone from teenagers to participants in their 90s, creating an inclusive environment where exercise benefits both physical and mental wellbeing. Her upbeat approach and carefully chosen music have become a hallmark of the sessions, with participants leaving each class smiling.

Many members of Fiona’s classes live with heart or lung conditions, osteoporosis or diabetes, while others are preparing for or recovering from hip and knee replacements. Such is the popularity of the sessions that people regularly travel from Dundee, Arbroath and Kirriemuir to take part.

Beyond promoting fitness, Fiona has also raised thousands of pounds for breast cancer and secondary breast cancer research, causes that are particularly meaningful to many members of her classes.

Reflecting on her visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Fiona said: “It was an absolute honour to have attended the King’s Garden Party.

“What a day to remember as I met King Charles, who shook my hand and asked me where I was from. When I said Carnoustie, he asked about the golf course, was it difficult? I said yes and he said he was sure I was better at golf than he is!”

Fiona’s invitation to His Majesty’s Garden Party is a fitting tribute to the dedication and enthusiasm she brings to her classes every week, inspiring people of all ages and abilities to stay active and connected.
