BE ACTIVE…live well

Regular physical activity plays an important role in living well, but we recognise that it isn’t always easy to know where to start.  Be Active…Live Well provides a range of activities and supports people who are living with a long-term health condition, identified as at risk of developing one or who are currently inactive, to become more active.

Our Health & Wellbeing Advisors are specially trained and will support you to find an activity that’s right for you, helping you build your confidence in using physical activity to improve your health and wellbeing.  You can either self-refer into the programme or be referred by a healthcare professional, using the form.

Active Start is a 12 week closed programme for individuals who aren’t currently active – this may be due to a long-term health condition, those recovering from illness, injury or a health event such as a stroke, or perhaps they aren’t sure where to start.  Each week comprises of a low-level instructor led activity, followed by relaxation and an opportunity to discuss different topics that can support a healthy lifestyle.  The aim of the programme is to build confidence with physical activity and increase awareness of how this can support in self-management or prevention of health conditions.

Access to Be Active…Live Well classes is by referral only – please complete the referral form or contact the team for more information.

Upon completion of the programme, or as a starting point for those a little more confident but still looking for support, our Stay Active classes offer a range of suitable, bookable activities to encourage continued activity.  Delivered by specialist instructors, classes include seated yoga, circuits and gym sessions amongst others – we also have health walks running as part of ANGUSalive’s Healthy Steps AngusAll activities, apart from health walks (although it is also advisable), should be booked in advance, which can be done in person, calling the sports centre or via the ANGUSalive app.

What are the benefits of being more active?

Regular physical activity is an important part of living well. People who lead an active lifestyle are more likely to live longer and less likely to develop serious illnesses and health conditions. Research also suggests that regular physical activity can improve your general mood, self-confidence and sleep quality as well as give you more energy and reduce stress levels.

What Our Members Say

Before starting with ANGUSalive, I could barely walk 50 meters without sitting down for a rest and after doing the programme for a while, my physical fitness, and importantly, my mental health improved beyond belief.

I am a type 2 diabetic on insulin and didn’t do any kind of sport before I started the BE ACTIVE…live well classes. After starting the classes my diabetic consultant was so impressed with me he reduced the levels of insulin I take. Then Covid 19 started and with no classes and isolation I had a real problem controlling my blood sugars and the levels of insulin I had to take doubled.

Now that we are back, I go to 4-5 Aqua classes, 1 Circuit and 2 Gym classes a week and there has been a major improvement in my overall fitness and control of my blood sugar. The instructor is also aware of each individual’s health requirements and is able to give them great satisfaction in what they have achieved. This is what makes the classes so enjoyable.

When I first started the Live Well classes, I wasn’t sure it would be any help to me at all as I use crutches to walk even a few steps. But with perseverance, and the help of the instructor, who helps you create a course tailored to your medical needs, things have improved. Not only my body, but my mind as well.

I would recommend it to anyone. The people doing the classes are all friendly and happy to see new faces. There is no bias as we all have our own problems and offer support, advice and a chance to have a few laughs!
