Celebrating the Success of Angus’s 2026 Summer Reading Challenge

Angus has once again been getting lost in great stories this summer, as readers of all ages took part in ANGUSalive Libraries’ 2026 Summer Reading Challenge.

Running from Saturday 4 July to Saturday 22 August, this year’s challenge encouraged participants to read six books over eight weeks, with everyone completing the challenge receiving a special medal and certificate to celebrate their achievement.

The 2026 challenge attracted 1,318 participants, including 994 junior and 324 adult readers, an increase of 38 participants on last year’s total of 1,280.

Readers borrowed a total of 13,773 Summer Reading Challenge books through ANGUSalive’s seven libraries, two mobile libraries and home delivery service.

There was one particularly enthusiastic young reader at Brechin Library, who deserves a special mention after borrowing an incredible 73 books during the challenge.

Christine Sharp, Adult & Community Libraries Lead, said:

“It’s fantastic to see so many people across Angus making time for reading this summer. The Summer Reading Challenge is all about encouraging people to pick up a book, discover something new and, most importantly, enjoy reading. We hope everyone who took part has found some new favourites along the way and will keep that reading habit going long after the challenge has finished.”

The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way for people of all ages to discover new authors, explore different genres and make reading part of their summer routine. Whether they chose fiction, non-fiction, poetry, picture books, graphic novels or something completely different, every reader could choose their own books and enjoy their own reading journey.

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part in this year’s challenge, and to all the ANGUSalive Libraries staff who helped make it such a success.

ANGUSalive Libraries would like to congratulate everyone who took part and hope readers enjoyed their summer of reading, discovered some new favourites and continue to enjoy picking up a good book.
