Meffan Winter Show opens for its 32nd year
The ANGUSalive Meffan Winter Show opened with a preview evening of the selected works on Friday 8 November.
This year’s show attracted over 230 artworks which were considered for the show, with 187 pieces being selected for the exhibition in Forfar’s Meffan Museum & Art Gallery. As well as showcasing their work in this open exhibition, each of the selected artists had the opportunity for their work to be chosen to become a permanent piece in the Angus public collection.
At this year’s preview event, guests were treated to a selection of refreshing gins, rums, and moonshine from local distillers, Angus Alchemy.
Meghann Logue, ANGUSalive Exhibition Lead said: “We are delighted to showcase a diverse range of artistic expression from artists across Scotland at the 2024 Meffan Winter Show. From paintings and sculpture to ceramics and jewellery, there really is something for everyone.”
The ANGUSalive purchase prize was split between five pieces, Beverley Campbell’s acrylic and ink on linen titled “Callanish”. Beverley said of her piece that “the Callanish stone circle captivated me on my journey to a residency in Fair Isle. Their majestic presence overlooking the sea stirred a sense of awe within me, knowing that they had stood the test of time. This piece painted on linen with acrylics and ink emerged. Practically I could transport it home and then stretch it later. It is stretched onto a board and framed in a St Ives frame.”
Gemma Hare shared this year’s purchase prize with her piece titled “Briney Sands”, an abstract seascape based on Aberdeen beach. Gemma said that her work “explores the colours and the feelings experienced at the location, as opposed to an exact visual representation.”
Jennifer Mackie also received this year’s purchase prize with her piece titled “Head study at sunrise”, an alla prima head study painted at sunrise using oil paint on arches huile paper.
Margaret Dallas Findlay secured her purchase prize place with her acrylic on canvas board piece titled “Lightbulb Moment”, Margaret said of her work “I was inspired to paint this when I discovered a single, surviving lightbulb in a derelict cottage on Peaston Farm, East Lothian.”
Taking the fifth purchase prize for 2024 was Pamela Cumming with her drawing titled “Girl in Shadow”.
The exhibition can be viewed free of charge and runs from Saturday 9 November until Monday 6 January 2025.
Visitors can cast their vote for the Visitors Choice Award which will be announced on Friday 20 December on social media.
