Kym Needle – A Sixty Year Circular Journey Making Pictures at Meffan Museum
ANGUSalive Museums & Galleries is delighted to present “Kym Needle – A Sixty Year Circular Journey Making Pictures”, a major solo exhibition showcasing over six decades of work by renowned Australian artist Kym Needle.Opening on 5 July 2025 at the Meffan Museum & Art Gallery in Forfar, the exhibition runs through to 6 October 2025. Originally from Gawler and raised in rural South Australia, Kym Needle’s profound connection with the Australian landscape has inspired a lifetime of painting. His work explores this terrain through the lens of Western European painting traditions, grappling with European colonial history and paying tribute to the thousands‑year‑old journeys of Aboriginal people. The exhibition includes Needle’s most significant works spanning his early career in the 1960s to his current practice in Angus, where he has lived and worked since 2006. Visitors will explore paintings that reflect his evolving vision, including landscapes, abstracts, and atmospheric compositions that blend cultural contemplation with a deeply felt sense of place. The exhibition features poetry by celebrated local poet Henry Marsh (1944-2024) whose verses have appeared alongside Needle’s artwork in past shows. Museums, Galleries & Archives Exhibitions Lead, Meghann Logue said: “Kym Needle’s work invites us to reflect on both the landscapes that shape us and the histories we inherit. His paintings are deeply personal yet universally resonant. We are delighted to host this major retrospective in Angus, where Kym has made such a meaningful contribution to the local arts community.” You can find out more about the exhibition here.
