Raising Breast Cancer Awareness at Montrose Sports Centre

Following a successful fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness at Montrose Sports Centre last year, Fiona Sword and her group exercise class will Wear it Pink to raise funds for Breast Cancer Now on Friday 18 October.

Last year Fiona raised £380 and will again be holding a Wear it Pink day on 18 October at Montrose Sports Centre.   As well as joining in the fun of Fiona’s Les Mills Body Attack or RPM class, other classes on the day will be participating by wearing it pink and there will also be some little lucky square competitions and treats to buy.

Fiona was a regular participant in group fitness classes at Montrose Sports Centre for years and had become a self-professed Body Attack addict.  She had considered training as an instructor but told herself that she was probably too old.

In 2018 at the age of 44, Fiona was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and went through surgery and radiotherapy treatment.  Although it was a tough time, she continued to attend as many classes possible and looked forward to that hour in the day where she could forget about cancer.  After Fiona finished treatment, she decided to would sign herself up to be a Body Attack instructor and undertook the training. This was a big challenge as she had never coached before, but she loved it and it gave her a huge focus.

Almost 6 years on Fiona is now teaching Body Attack twice a week along with Les Mills Grit, RPM and Core.

Fiona says: “I still love the challenge that teaching classes brings both physically and mentally and I love that I get to meet so many fantastic people.  We have class participants who have been affected by breast cancer and I often hear stories from them about how their lives have been impacted by it as well as other types of cancer.

She went on to say: “We never know what life has in store for us, but group exercise can help have a positive impact on how we cope with it both physically and mentally.

“Montrose Sports Centre has a great community environment which allows us to get together with other people to do something healthy and fun so why not use the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for live saving research at the same time.”

If you can’t make it along to join Fiona or any of the group exercise classes on 18 October, you can donate to her fundraiser here.
