Arbroath Library & Angus Archives to Reopen Following Refurbishment
A new chapter is set to begin for Arbroath Library, as final steps are taken in preparation for the reopening of this much-loved space following a major refurbishment.
Operated by ANGUSalive, Arbroath Library will officially reopen on Wednesday 6 May, with improvements transforming the building into a bright, modern and welcoming environment, while continuing to offer the wide range of services local people rely on.
To allow for final preparations, Arbroath Library and Angus Archives will be closed from Monday 27 April to Wednesday 6 May allowing staff to move the main library back downstairs as well as organising the remainder of the library collection currently in storage.
During this period, customers can access ANGUSalive Library services at alternative locations or contact Angus Council Access Services via the ACCESSline on 0345 277 7778.
The community of Arbroath and surrounding areas is warmly invited to attend the reopening event on Wednesday 6 May at 10am, which will include a short ribbon-cutting ceremony. Bookbug will also be in attendance for a special Bookbug session between 1:15pm and 1:45pm.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the refreshed space, including new front desk, display wall, private ACCESS pod and a new Learning Shop space as well as the wide range of services available, including access to an extensive catalogue of books, digital borrowing through the Libby app, a varied programme of activities for children and adults, dementia-friendly resources, and Macmillan Cancer Support services. The building is also home to the new search room of Angus Archives, now relocated from Restenneth Priory, offering access to family and local history resources, research services, digital archives and photographic collections.
Arbroath’s rich library heritage dates back to 1797, when the town’s first Subscription Library opened. Following the Public Libraries Act of 1850, support for a public library grew, and in 1898, industrialist David Corsar, gifted the former Academy building on Hill Terrace to Arbroath Town Council, paving the way for the opening of Arbroath Public Library. This latest refurbishment ensures the historic building continues to serve as a modern, accessible hub for the community.
Looking ahead, the Arbroath team plans to host a larger celebration of the refurbishment during the summer months, with further details to be announced.
The team looks forward to welcoming everyone back to this valued community space.
