Angus Libraries Launch Sensory Bags to Support Inclusive Access for All

Angus Libraries are taking an exciting step forward in inclusive service delivery with the launch of a new Sensory Bags initiative, designed to support children, caregivers, and individuals with additional support needs right across Angus.

Funded through the Scottish Government Public Library Improvement Fund, the Sensory Bags project brings engaging, multi-sensory resources directly into the hands of those who need them most. Each bag is packed with carefully chosen items, such as books, fidget toys, and instruments to stimulate the senses of touch, hearing, and sight, making story time more accessible, meaningful, and enjoyable for everyone.

The public is warmly invited to the Forfar Library event on 8 July, where the new sensory bags will be unveiled alongside demonstrations and discussions about their use. Guests are encouraged to RSVP to Laura Smith at laura.ap.smith@angusalive.scot by 1 July 2025.

Laura Smith, Disability & Inclusion Lead for ANGUSalive said of the project, “the introduction of sensory bags across our library services marks a meaningful step toward making our services more inclusive and welcoming for all.  These resources are thoughtfully designed to support children and adults with additional support needs, helping reduce barriers and enhance comfort in the library environment.

We’re proud to create spaces and materials where everyone can explore, learn, and feel a sense of belonging.”

The Sensory Bags will be available at all Angus libraries, including the mobile libraries, with the option for home delivery through the existing library’s Home Delivery service.

With staff training, promotional campaigns, and sensory-friendly events already in motion, the Sensory Bags project is set to enrich library services in Angus now and into the future.
