An exceptional turnout for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge – Read, Enjoy and Discover! Has seen an impressive turn out from the readers of Angus.

During the 8-week challenge, running from Monday 1 July – Saturday 24 August, ANGUSalive Libraries saw a total of 1136 (270 Adult and 866 Junior) residents of the Angus sign up to take part. The beats lasts year total by 128 participants! In total, across all seven libraries, two mobile libraries and our home delivery service, a total of 12652 reading challenge books were issued.

Christine Sharp, Adult & Community Libraries Lead said of this year’s competition“The weather has been very mixed this summer, but this doesn’t seem to have affected this year’s Summer Reading Challenge here in Angus! Lots of children and adults have enrolled in the challenge as usual and all have enjoyed reading a wide variety of genres and titles available in all our libraries and mobile libraries too. Feedback from those who finished has been very positive, with lots of kids and adults alike commenting how delighted and proud they are to have received their certificate and medal at the end of their 6th book.”

We’re sure everyone has enjoyed seeing the photos on Facebook of some of the excited finishers across our libraries!

David Main, Libraries Team Leader added – Reading provides many benefits including improved spelling, empathy, positive mental health and is a proven method of raising attainment.  Libraries support readers across Angus with access to books, comics, magazines and much more.  For our young readers who want to continue their good reading habits during the school holidays, they even get rewarded with a medal!  It’s like the Olympics for your brain! Well done to all of those who took part and completed the Summer Reading Challenge 2024.”

If you missed out this year, there’s always next year – if you get in the reading habit now, you too could be a medal winner next summer!
