Discover Angus through its Museums this Scottish Museums Day
Celebrate Scottish Museums Day on Saturday 3 October with a visit to one of ANGUSalive’s three museums and discover the stories, people, places and collections that make Angus unique.
The theme for this year’s Scottish Museums Day is ‘The ABC of Scottish Museums.’
ANGUSalive is inviting residents and visitors to explore Arbroath Signal Tower Museum, Forfar Meffan Museum & Art Gallery and Montrose Museum & Art Gallery. With free admission, there’s no better time to step inside, discover something new and find out more about the fascinating heritage of Angus.
From A to Z, Armour to Zoological specimens, the Bell Rock Lighthouse, to Pictish stones, fine art, natural history and objects from around the world, each museum offers a different way to explore the past and understand the places we live in today.
Explore Angus’s maritime story
Located beside Arbroath Harbour, Arbroath Signal Tower Museum tells the story of Arbroath’s close relationship with the sea, fishing and maritime industries, as well as the remarkable story of the Bell Rock Lighthouse.
Visitors can discover the challenges faced by the lighthouse keepers and the lives of the people who worked and lived around the harbour.
The museum is also home to The Beacon Gallery & Shop, showcasing work by artists and makers from Angus and the surrounding area, offering visitors the chance to take home a little piece of local creativity.
Discover the history of Forfar
At Forfar Meffan Museum & Art Gallery, visitors can explore the history of the county town and its people, the museum is particularly well known for its collection of Pictish carved stones, providing a glimpse into Angus’s early history, while the gallery programme brings together exhibitions and artwork that connect the local with the wider world.
The Meffan has been part of Forfar’s cultural life since opening in 1898, having been funded by Jane Meffan in memory of her father, William Meffan, a former Provost of the town.
Step inside Montrose’s collections
Montrose Museum & Art Gallery offers another window into the rich history and culture of Angus. Its collections span natural history, archaeology, social history and fine art, reflecting the people, landscapes and communities of the area. Visit Tartan & Turmoil the Angus Jacobite Story on Scottish Museums Day and the exhibition catalogue will be half price to all visitors.

From April to October, the museums are open Wednesday to Monday, 10.30am–4pm, with Tuesdays closed. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
