New Publication: The History of Angus in 30 Objects

New Publication: The History of Angus in 30 Objects
10% discount for Scottish Museums Day on Friday 3 October
ANGUSalive Museums & Galleries is delighted to announce the publication of a new book, The History of Angus in 30 Objects: From Everyday to Extraordinary. This is the second book in a series which explores the rich collections that ANGUSalive cares for.

Born from the union of the seven historic burgh towns of Angus, the extraordinary collections span thousands of years, capturing the essence of a region that has left its mark on the world. Through key objects, this small publication highlights aspects of the social, cultural, and industrial history of Angus, each one a window into the birthplace of Scotland. Read about the Marquis of Montrose, Bell Rock Lighthouse which is known as a marvel of engineering, the notorious Forfar witch trials, AC/DC’s Bon Scott from Kirriemuir, Robert Watson-Watt from Brechin who pioneered the use of radar during WWII, the recently discovered Flemington II Pictish stone and much more!

The collection’s rich Victorian-era roots include generous gifts from philanthropists such as Lord Panmure, president of the Montrose Natural History and Antiquarian Society, whose legacy helped establish one of Scotland’s first purpose-built museums. Continuously growing and evolving, the collection benefits from ongoing donations, bequests, and purchases.

Emma Gilliland, Museums & Galleries Collections Lead, said: “This publication follows the release of our first book in the series, Highlights from the Fine Art Collection. We’re proud to prioritise ongoing research into our historically significant collections and are delighted to be able to share these books with visitors. Look out for further new releases in the coming years.”

The History of Angus in 30 Objects  and Highlights from the Angus Fine Art Collection books, along with other items from Museums Gift Shops, can  be purchased from Arbroath Signal Tower Museum, Montrose Museum and Forfar Meffan Museum & Art Gallery. The museums are open every day apart from a Tuesday, from 10.30am-4pm. Both books are priced at £6, but there is a special offer of 10% for Scottish Museums Day on Friday 3 October 2025.

Emma urges people to get in touch regarding research enquiries or object donations. To find out more about donating to the collection visit https://angusalive.scot/museums-galleries/museums-galleries-archives-collection-donations/.

ANGUSalive is honoured to steward this remarkable collection on behalf of the people of Angus, ensuring Angus heritage remains vibrant, accessible and inspiring for generations to come.
