Angus Libraries Celebrate Official Launch of Sensory Bags Initiative

On Tuesday 8 July 2025, Forfar Library hosted the official launch of the innovative Sensory Bags initiative. The event welcomed a diverse group of local families, Creative Learning Advisors (CLAs), library staff, and key figures including Chief Executive Kirsty Hunter and Disability & Inclusion Lead Laura Smith.

This initiative has been made possible through the generous support and funding from SLIC, the Scottish Library and Information Council.  We’re incredibly grateful to them for recognising the value of this project and helping us bring it to life.

For many people, particularly children and adults with sensory processing needs, visiting a library can sometimes feel overwhelming. Noise, light, unfamiliar spaces… they can all present real challenges. Our sensory bags have been carefully developed to offer comfort, and reassurance, so that more people can enjoy the benefits of the library in a way that suits their needs.

Each bag contains a selection of sensory tools such as fidget items/ toys, story books, song sheet, musical instruments, comfort objects, designed to support individuals who may be neurodivergent, have additional support needs, or who simply need a little help in navigating the space.

Guests at the launch enjoyed live demonstrations and explored the wide range of sensory bags now available to support inclusive access in libraries and beyond. Laura Smith expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting “this isn’t just about the bags themselves, it’s about what they represent. They send a clear message: that our libraries are for everyone, and everyone should feel safe, valued, and supported when they walk through our doors.  We know that libraries are more than just books. They are places of discovery, creativity, calm, and connection. And with initiatives like this, we take one more important step towards ensuring our services truly reflect the diverse needs of our communities.”

The Sensory Bags are available at all Angus libraries, including mobile libraries, with home delivery options. This initiative is part of a broader programme that includes staff training and sensory-friendly events, ensuring a lasting positive impact.

A full list of available bags can be found in the Library Catalogue

The team would like to thank everyone who attended and helped make the launch a success.
