Community Sport Impact
Celebrating the impact of sport and physical activity in the community
As we look ahead to our hopes and ambitions for the future, we’re already seeing the powerful difference that sport and physical activity can make across our communities today.
Through ACTION, we see local partnerships, inclusive programmes, and dedicated volunteers continue to create opportunities that improve physical health, mental wellbeing, confidence, and social connection throughout Angus.
Here are just six of the projects helping to make a lasting impact across the Angus community.
Webster's Sports Centre Community Sport Hub
Working in partnership with Angus Active Schools, Angus Community Sports Hub offers Kirriemuir Hub Connect, giving families the chance to improve wellbeing through recreational activity.
The Changing Room
The Changing room by SAMH is a 12-week mental health literacy programme designed by SAMH to improve the confidence, resilience and mental wellbeing of males aged 18-30 in and around Arbroath, with a view to improving the lives they lead through physical activity. Each week, participants will be welcomed in by our team of trained facilitators for a cuppy before taking part in conversations linking mental health (through the lens of physical activity) or even being physically active on certain weeks, all conducted in a safe space environment.
Through investment from the National Lottery Community Fund, we are in position to offer year-long membership opportunities for participants in one of our PASS accredited providers after the 12-week programme completes.
Mental Health Awareness Week Walking Sports Event
The 2025 Walking Sports event at Forfar’s Station Park to mark Mental Health Awareness Week was enjoyed by 100 participants.
This event was an opportunity to recognise the positive impact that sport and physical activity have on fostering stronger communities throughout Angus, and to celebrate the deep level of contribution that local organisations and groups have in helping to achieve this.
Active Families Pickleball
Active Families Pickleball sessions are designed to enable whole families to take part in fun, recreational physical activity together at no cost to participants at all.
The sessions are non-instructor-led, fun environment which promotes inclusion, socialisation and a chance to learn new skills in the fastest growing sport in Angus.
Sharing and Learning Summit
On Thursday 2 October, Forfar Community Sports Hub held their first annual sharing and learning summit at Forfar’s Reid Hall.
The event was attended by around 40 delegates, who discussed the benefits of sport on health & wellbeing, ways to connect to hard to reach pockets of the community and how they can support people who face barriers to being physically active.
Local sports and activity clubs and providers presented their experiences and ways in which their organisation can help the community be active, as well as highlighting the benefit that activity plays on family relationships, opportunities to travel and most importantly, the wellbeing of the participants.
International Speaking Club
A group of Ukrainian guests reached out through Voluntary Action Angus to learn about opportunities and to find a venue where they can improve their English and meet other people, as part of an approach to settle into the town and integrate with the local community. They were struggling to find employment due to language barriers and were not aware of all the services and support available to them in the area.
ANGUSalive Community Sport Hub coordinator Ross Taylor, agreed to facilitate a “Ukrainian speaking club” at Montrose Sports Centre. This weekly activity was a safe, inclusive space for Ukrainians to come together, meet others, and can spend time practising conversations in English as well as Ukrainian.
