Everything Flows: Time and Memory in an Angus Glen
Everything Flows: Time and Memory in an Angus Glen, an exhibition by Bill Duncan with Angus Lockhart
Bill Duncan been exploring the Northern glens of Angus for 45 years. His camera and notebook are constant companions and ‘Everything Flows’ documents his interaction with these beautiful landscapes through photography and writing.
The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus observed that ‘Everything Flows,’ describing nature as being in a constant state of change. Famously, he also noted that ‘You never step into the same river twice.’ This work explores the waterfalls, pools, rivers and lochs of Glen Esk against these evocative notions.
The quotations resonate within a human dimension: just as the river is in a state of constant change, so are we. Bill is not the same person who first stepped into that river 45 years ago, or, for that matter, a year or a month ago. And photography deals in time: each of these images portrays geological features which formed over aeons, captured by a camera in seconds or a fraction of a second. Meanwhile, Bill changes while his own time passes between each photograph and each return to the glen.
The river’s journey from its source high in the mountains, through the glen and beyond, is evocative of the human journey through space and time. Like the Esk, Mark or Unich, everything flows.
