Countryside Rangers

The ANGUSalive Ranger Service is delivered by a dedicated team of Rangers working across three sites in Angus: Crombie Country Park, Monikie Country Park and Forfar Loch Country Park. Active all year round, the team leads public events, supports volunteer groups, visits schools, delivers outdoor learning experiences, runs holiday activities for children, and cares for and maintains these valued natural spaces for everyone to enjoy.

What We Do

The Ranger Service delivers a wide range of public events throughout the year to help people connect with nature. Guided wildlife walks take visitors through the Country Parks, including popular events like Wild Wander to Corrie Fee, or species-focused walks such as Clash of the Titans at Glen Doll, which highlights red deer, and Red Alert at Crombie Country Park, which focuses on spotting red squirrels.

Seasonal holiday camps run during Easter, Summer and October school holidays, giving children a week of daily outdoor activities. Campers take part in bushcraft skills such as shelter building and fire lighting, create woodland crafts and natural art, explore local wildlife, and enjoy free play in the woods, all while learning about conservation and the environment.

Volunteers from across Angus play a vital role in supporting the Ranger Service. Local schools, colleges and community groups regularly join the Rangers to help with practical conservation work, including invasive species removal, heathland restoration, habitat creation, and wildlife monitoring. Volunteers gain hands-on experience in woodland management, citizen science, and safe tool use while learning more about local habitats and their importance.

The Friends of Forfar Loch is a dedicated monthly volunteer group that has contributed significantly to Forfar Loch Country Park. Their work includes removing invasive Himalayan balsam, planting trees, creating wildlife habitats, and collecting litter to improve the park for visitors and wildlife alike. Find out about upcoming dates.

For more information about volunteering opportunities, visit the volunteering webpage or get in touch with the team.

The Ranger Service offers engaging outdoor education sessions for schools across Angus. These can be tailored for pupils of all ages, from nursery and primary through to secondary students, and can also support teachers and teaching assistants. Sessions can be booked individually or as part of a series and include activities such as Forest School, habitat exploration, wildlife monitoring, and practical conservation tasks.

These sessions are designed to enhance learning, develop curiosity about the natural world, and provide practical skills and knowledge about the environment and sustainability. For more information, please view the Education Brochure or get in touch with the team.

Junior Rangers

Once a month, Crombie Country Park hosts the Junior Rangers programme for young people aged 11–18. Participants get hands-on experience with practical conservation projects, learning about woodland management, wildlife, and the environment. The programme encourages teamwork, skill development, and a love of nature, giving participants the opportunity to make a real difference in their local area while gaining insight into the work of a Countryside Ranger.

Participants can work towards their official Junior Ranger Award from the Scottish Countryside Rangers Association (SCRA), recognising their commitment to learning the skills vital to a Ranger Service.

Meet The Team

Marcus oversees operations at all three of our country parks, including working closely with the Rangers to mange the park’s many needs. He’s passionate about creating environments that balance the needs of wildlife and visitors, hopefully as harmoniously as possible, especially looking at ways we can increase the visitor’s experience, and encourage more natural habitat. Otherwise he is usually busy with the commercial operations of the parks too. Outside of work, he is usually found blethering about history or hiking up the glens or some castle with his dog Rusty.

Callum focuses on our amazing Junior Rangers and work experience programmes. He’s passionate about getting young people working with their hands, getting experience, and making a difference in our country parks. He’s also the only Ranger who gets visits from our resident pine martens! On his days off you can usually find him cycling the countryside of Angus!

Huw focuses on providing volunteering opportunities in our Country Parks. From a varied background in Ranger roles, working on landscape restoration projects, and restoring and rewilding a private estate, Huw brings his practical experience to the ANGUSalive Ranger Service to help encourage people to take care of their local wild spaces and help them thrive.
