Liz Douglas – A Life in Art
ANGUSalive’s Museums & Galleries team are looking forward to welcoming visitors to the first exhibition of 2024, presented in the newly refurbished art gallery space at the Meffan Museum & Art Gallery, West High Street, Forfar.
A Life in Art -which showcases the distinctive contemporary work of Liz Douglas opened on Saturday 3 February in the art gallery, transformed thanks to funding by the Museums Galleries Scotland’s Resilience Fund.
Liz Douglas was widely known across Scotland as a very distinctive contemporary landscape painter who researched and painted many lesser known, often remote, settings across Scotland. Liz was born and brought up in Aberlemno, by Forfar, went to High School in Brechin, where she also worked for a while, before moving to Edinburgh and eventually going to Edinburgh Art College. Soon after her postgraduate degree she became a professional member of the Society of Scottish Artists, winning various awards for her art.
Liz died in May 2022 having exhibited in public and private exhibitions across Scotland and this exhibition showcases work, chosen from across her fifty-year career by husband Jim Douglas. ANGUSalive’s Exhibition Lead, Meghann Logue commented: “We are deeply honoured and delighted to pay tribute to Liz Douglas and her outstanding body of work. This exhibition shows how Liz was continually experimenting and evolving, using artistic techniques as a way to convey thoughts, ideas and feelings about her discoveries.”
The free exhibition is the first of a busy exhibition programme at the Meffan Museum & Art Gallery, it follows the successful ANGUSalive Meffan Winter Show which finished on 8 January.
Rachel Jackson, Museums Galleries and Archives Operations Lead explained: “Thanks to the support of Museums Galleries Scotland who recognise the importance of the Meffan Museum & Art Gallery as an outstanding gallery space, an award of £48,000 enabled work to be carried out to replace the 40-year-old lighting and decor. Local contractors successfully carried out this work in just two and half weeks with the resulting galleries renovated and illuminated using up to date energy saving lighting.”
