ANGUSalive Seriously Social Campaign: Inclusion

ANGUSalive, as part of the Seriously Social Campaign, will reflect on how we promote inclusion as a key part of our organisation. From our diverse range of services to our inclusive programmes and accessible facilities, we are dedicated to breaking down barriers and promoting social equality throughout our business and we continue to strive on much more.

Disability and Inclusion at ANGUSalive

ANGUSalive are extremely proud on the work that has been delivered in the community which makes our services accessible. Laura Smith was  awarded an OBE in 2017 for services to Disability Sport and has been instrumental in supporting sport for people with disabilities in Angus for many years. It’s this type of dedication that means Angus has benefitted from a varied suite of inclusive programmes throughout the calendar year as well as our holiday activity offering in the Easter, Summer and October holidays.

A recent example of this type of work is a recent Track & Field event which attracted nearly 300 participants.

The team also operate a Buddy Scheme, a free programme to support customers who require assistance in order to access our wide range of facilities. The scheme provides the customer with the help and support they need to take part as their “buddy” can attend the session free of charge.

We also offer 1-to-1 coach support, where we support individuals to participate in activities by building support that is shaped around them, to help achieve their goals and wishes.

And in 2023, ANGUS-alive launched 1-2-1 swimming for participants with additional support needs, which has proven extremely popular. It was poignant that GB down syndrome athlete joined the team to help deliver these sessions.

Building an Inclusive Environment

Creating an inclusive environment means ensuring that everyone feels welcome and valued in our facilities.

Our Community Sports Hubs are an excellent facilitator in being in demonstrating inclusivity.

Our approach is to support and empower local people to improve sport & physical activity through understanding the needs within our communities and collaborating to facilitate and deliver activities and interventions.  Our Ukrainian Speaking Club launched last year and has helped develop a safe space for Ukrainian people – who have been displaced due to the on-going war –  to meet one another, improve their English and integrate with the local community in Montrose.

The network of Community Sport Hubs that exist throughout Angus make sure it’s

Healthy Steps Angus

The benefits of walking are significant. It’s an activity that has a positive impact on both mental and physical health, which are well documented.

Whether it’s getting a breath of fresh air, clearing the mind or just needing a change of scene – it can work wonders on your body in more ways than one. Those extra steps help you build stamina, hearth health and torch those calories.

But one of the key things it does too is help those who are isolated. A health walk might be one of the only times where someone has social interaction with other people, which is why they are so important in the community.

Rhona Guild, who heads up our Healthy Steps Angus programme, has steadily grown the programme since it launched where it has created lots of new walks, including buggy walks. In the below video, you can watch Rhona describe the positive impact that walking can have on people’s day to day life from a mental health perspective.
